Top 5 – Awesome Movies Coming to Netflix in June
This looks like one of the strongest months for Netflix I have ever seen. There is a great mixture of modern gems and cinematic classics, along with one of their most anticipated original movies. Check out my picks for the best movies coming to Netflix in June.

5 – OKJA (Bong Joon Ho, 2017)
Okja recently made it’s world premiere at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival and reviews for the film are mostly positive. In a bizarre story reminiscent of a weird E.T. (1982) a young girl risks everything to prevent a powerful, multi-national company from kidnapping her best friend – a massive animal named Okja. The cast is absolutely stellar with Tilda Swinton, Paul Dano, Steven Yeun, Lily Collins, and Jake Gyllenhaal, and it is directed by the visionary director of Snowpiercer (2014), which is one of the best sci-fi movies of the decade. Sounds like Netflix has something really special on their hands this time.
4 – THE SIXTH SENSE (M. Night Shyamalan, 1999)
With the recent success of M. Night Shylamalan’s Split (2017), it is now the perfect time to revisit the film that started it all. The Sixth Sense is a really great film. A smart, chilling, genuinely creepy tale about a psychiatrist (Bruce Willis in one of his best performances) who helps a troubled child (a sensational Haley Joel Osment) who sees dead people. Everyone knows the twist, but that is only part of the movie’s greatness. Shyamalan created a movie similar to that of Hitchcock, and this is coming from a HUGE Hitchcock fan. Definitely give this movie a re-watch, as it is one of the finest directorial debuts of the last 30 years.
3 – ROUNDERS (John Dahl, 1998)
Don’t think you’ll like Rounders because it’s a poker movie? Think again. Rounders is a character study wrapped in film noir, with themes of redemption, friendship, and identity, all while playing a little cards. Rounders does an exceptional job of explaining the poker so everyone is in the loop, yet it is the characters and the story of Mike McDermott (Matt Damon) trying to get out of the life that once broke him that hook the audience. Damon is great, as is Edward Norton as Mike’s sketchy friend Worm. But it’s the great John Malkovich who steals the show as Teddy KGB, the mob boss Mike and Worm owe money to. His incredible accent and outbursts are legendary. Rounders is an all-timer for me and one that has more layers than most will think.
2 – YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN (Mel Brooks, 1974)
I just had the luxury of watching this movie on the big screen for the first time ever, followed by an amazing Q ‘n’ A after the movie by the one and only Mel Brooks. It was a mind-blowing experience getting to see one of the greatest comedic and cinematic minds talk about his life and career on stage and made me fall in love with Young Frankenstein even more. This is one of the greatest comedies ever made. A movie that is as smart as it is funny. With the legendary Gene Wilder leading the perfect cast, everyone is at their absolute best. The humor isn’t lowbrow and there are so many little facial ticks and side-jokes, it requires multiple viewings and you will enjoy every single one of them. This is a true cinematic masterpiece and my favorite Mel Brooks’ movie.
1 – ZODIAC (David Fincher, 2007)
Since doing this Movies Coming to Netflix article, I don’t know if I have had two true masterpieces at the top two spots. The only reason why I have Zodiac at the number one spot as opposed to Young Frankenstein is because I think movie people need to see Zodiac. This is the definition of underrated and underseen. David Fincher created a sprawling procedural chronicling the true story the Zodiac killer in the 1970’s. This is one of Fincher’s finest works as a director, crafting every shot like painting and keeping this two and a half hour long epic tight, fast, and compelling. The all-star cast of Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr, Mark Ruffalo, Chloe Sevigne, Anthony Edwards, and Brian Cox all give awards-worthy performances. Zodiac is one of the best movies of this millennium and one you need to watch immediately.
